What does the NEO risk mean for an individual?

NEO impacts are an example of low probability, high consequence events where a single, large impact, although extremely infrequent, could cause millions of fatalities. For many generations there could be no significant event or events that cause only regional damage. The risk to the individual is, therefore, very small indeed and perhaps most comparable to that represented by a rare disease. The risk to human society and our species in general, however, is more significant.
