What dangers do NEOs pose to the Earth?

The Earth’s atmosphere protects against most NEOs smaller than about 50 m. However, larger objects can penetrate the atmosphere and cause devastating effects; luckily, large impacts occur infrequently. Smaller objects impact more frequently and, for instance, objects the size of the Tunguska airburst (about 50 m) can be expected less than once a century on average.

More information about the damage that could be caused by collisions can be seen in our virtual exhibition.
