Selected internet sites that provide information for the public on the hazards from Near Earth Objects are listed below. More extensive links, for example to observation and follow-up pages, are given in our NEO Report section.

Education Resources

  • PPARC Lunar and Meteorite Sample Loan Scheme
    • PPARC is the only authorised source for the loan of Apollo return material to educational or scientific organisations within the United Kingdom. Four educational packages are available free of charge (including special security delivery/collection) for short term loans of lunar samples and meteorites.

Information

  • Cambridge Conference Digest
    • A scholarly electronic network with lively discussions on all aspects of catastrophism.

  • Earth Impact Database
    • An electronic database of impact craters hosted by the Planetary and Space Science Centre at the University of New Brunswick.

  • NASA Asteroid and Comet Impact Hazards
    • NASA's impact hazard website

  • NASA NEO Program
    • NASA's Near Earth Objects Program page from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

  • Spaceguard UK
    • The UK Spaceguard organisation.

  • The Nine Planets
    • A web-based exhibition on the Solar System including asteroids and comets.

  • Tumbling Stone
    • A web-based magazine on NEOs produced by the Spaceguard Foundation.

Space Missions

  • Cassini
    • The NASA Cassini mission launched in Oct, 1997 and performed a distant flyby of the main belt asteroid Masursky on route to Saturn.

  • CONTOUR
    • The NASA CONTOUR mission launched on 3 July 2002, but was lost following a thruster burn on 15 August that should have sent the spacecraft out of Earth orbit.

  • Deep Impact
    • The NASA Deep Impact mission is due for launch in Jan 2004 and will rendezvous with Comet Temple 1 in July 2005. A smart impactor will be used to create a crater on the comet's nucleus.

  • Deep Space 1
    • The NASA Deep Space 1 mission was launched in Oct 1998 and encountered Comet Borrelly Sept 22, 2001.

  • Galileo
    • The NASA Galileo mission was launched in Oct, 1989 and passed by two main belt asteroids, Gaspra and Ida, on route to Jupiter.

  • Muses-C
    • The Japanese ISIS MUSES-C mission is scheduled to launch in May 2003 on its journey to rendezvous with Near Earth Asteroid 1998 SF36. The mission will sample dust from the asteroid and return it to Earth.

  • NEAR
    • The NASA NEAR mission was launched in Feb 1996 and visited the main belt asteroid Mathilde on route for its main target, the Near Earth Asteroid, Eros. NEAR encountered Eros on Feb 14, 2000 and was landed on the surface.

  • Rosetta
    • The ESA Rosetta mission in due for launch in Jan 2003 and will rendezvous with Comet Wirtanen on July 11, 2006. Two main belt asteroids, Otawara and Siwa will be visited by the probe on route.

  • SOHO
    • The NASA/ESA SOHO mission was launched in Dec, 1995 and its primary objective is to study the Sun. SOHO has, however, discovered nearly 500 comets.

  • Stardust
    • The NASA STARDUST mission was launched Feb 7, 1999 and will rendezvous with Comet Wild 2 in Jan, 2004. The spacecraft will collect dust from the comet and return it to the Earth in Jan, 2006.
