How close will the closest asteroid come to Earth?
The closest asteroids will actually hit Earth. Several 10 m sized asteroids (or comets) collide with our planet each year but are destroyed harmlessly in the upper atmosphere. One hundred metre diameter asteroids collide with Earth every few hundred or thousand years. Larger asteroids hit Earth even less frequently.
