Why sometimes do we not discover NEOs until they pass us?
Despite international efforts by astronomers worldwide NEOs, particularly small ones, are often discovered as they pass close to our planet. However, we have so far discovered over half of all Near Earth Asteroids larger than 1 km in size.
Sometimes asteroids are not observed because they approach the Earth from the daytime side of our planet.
