There is nothing we can do, so why bother?
A common misconception is that there is nothing we could do to avert the collision of an NEO. Scientists have, however, been studying how we could divert an asteroid for the last fifteen years and have concluded that given sufficient warning this could be achieved with existing technology. It is, therefore, important for us to continue searching for NEOs and cataloging their orbits.
