Would I be told?

Yes. It is unlikely that an NEO will appear without a long period of warning and government will ensure that the information is made widely available. Newly discovered NEOs are in anycase reported immediately on the internet by the Minor Planet Center so that astronomers can follow-up their orbits. It would, therefore, be very difficult for any one government or organisation to keep a potential impact secret.
