Why is follow-up activity required?
Follow-up activity is required to ensure that newly detected NEOs are not lost, as they recede from the earth, and to allow more accurate orbit determination. While larger telescopes (2m class and above) are ideal for follow-up, in the widest range of situations many amateur observations contribute to follow up activity. Archives of old observations can also be searched to look for an NEO on an earlier orbit, allowing even more accurate orbit determination.
More information on searches and follow-up can be seen in our virtual exhibition.
