Close Approaches

Encounter Dates

The date on which a NEO will approach the Earth, as well as its distance, is calculated from its orbit. When an object is discovered astronomers identify its most likely orbit through the Solar System based on its movement in the night sky. With each new observation of the NEO the orbit becomes more accurate and any close approaches can be projected many years into the future.
