Close Approaches

Distances

Distances in the Solar System are usually measured in Astronomical Units (or AU). One AU is the distance between the Earth and the Sun, around 150 million km. Because some NEOs approach the Earth to distances much less than 1 AU it is sometimes more convenient to express their distance as multiples of the distance between the Earth and the Moon, 385,000 km.
