The UK's Near Earth Objects Information Centre was launched today at the National Space Centre in Leicester. The Centre is one part of the UK Government's response to the Task Force Report on Potentially Hazardous Near Earth Objects published in September, 2000. Its role is to provide an information service to the public, media and scientists on NEO-issues and encouraging understanding of impact hazards.
The launch of the Centre coincides with the 126th anniversary of the fall of the Rowton meteorite in Shropshire, the UK's only iron meteorite. This meteorite is being displayed for the opening at the National Space Centre in Leicester till the end of April and is on loan from the Natural History Museum.
The press launch, earlier this week, was attended by Dr Colin Hicks, the head of the British National Space Centre and Dr Harry Atkinson, chairman of the Task Force.
