Following a tense few days that saw the first ever asteroid being assigned a level four on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, the threat from 2004 MN4 in 2029 has now been ruled out and its Torino rating reduced to one.
The clarification comes as a result of the dedication of astronomers around the world, who have continued to work throughout the holiday season. In addition to new observations, data from images taken in March 2004 have also helped to refine the object's orbit.
At its peak, asteroid 2004 MN4 had an impact probability of 1 in 37 associated with it.
