Fireball reported over central Texas
08/07/04

Witnesses say they saw a giant fireball over Texas on Wednesday evening. Police and local news agencies received hundreds of call between 9:15pm and 10:00pm local time, from residents who described something burning falling from the sky. Reports speak of a ball of fire with colours varying from red, green and white.

Local meteorologist, Lee Ringer told officials that these sightings were not the result of a weather event, but were more than likely a meteor passing through the Earth's atmosphere. The Texas Department of Public Safety said they had checked with local airports and no planes were reported downed in the area.

The timing of the sightings, which came from the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, suggest the object was travelling south. As yet, no reports of damage on the ground have been made, and no meteorite fragments have been recovered.
