Fireball seen over the UK
06/10/02

Eye witnesses have reported a fireball over the Midlands area of the UK. The bright light surprised a number of people on their way into work. Reports place the incident at around 4:50 U.T. Tony King, from the New Parks area of Leicester said, "At first I thought it was a plane on fire. It was glowing green, red and yellow, you could see the colours clearly."

"As yet there have been no reports of meteorites found on the ground" said Kevin Yates, Project Officer for the NEO Information Centre, "but we will have to wait and see how things develop over the next few days. If anything did survive the the fiery entry, it may have landed hundreds of miles away."

Freshly fallen meteorites typically have a shiny, black fusion crust on their surface. Anyone finding such a rock or stone is invited to contact the Near Earth Object Information Centre.
