What happened at Tunguska?

On June 30th, 1908 an object about 50 m in diameter disintegrated at an altitude of approximately 4 km above Tunguska in Russia with an explosive energy equivalent to more than 10 megatons of TNT. The explosion devastated over 2,000 square kilometres of Siberian taig�, felling more than 60 million trees, although no human fatalities were recorded in the sparsely populated area.
