How much damage can NEOs cause?

The affects of an impact depend on the size of the Near Earth Object and the speed with which it hits the Earth. For larger NEOs the speed is particularly important since the amount of energy released by an impact is the kinetic energy and depends on the velocity squared. For smaller NEOs their size and what they are made of are important in determining the amount of damage they cause on the ground.

More information on the affects of impacts of different size NEOs can be seen in our virtual exhibition.
