What will we do if we find an asteroid or comet on a collision course with Earth?

Due to the nature of NEO orbits (they will probably make many close approaches to the Earth before they threaten to impact it) the chance that an NEO will be discovered less than a few years before impact is small. This would allow time to determine the exact impact area so that emergency planning could be initiated and if appropriate evacuations performed.
