What does the Government response to the NEO report say?

The Government believes that since the possible dangers posed by Near Earth Objects are not limited to any one nation, an international approach to the problem is essential. The Government therefore plans to enter negotiations with other interested nations to establish a European strategy to tackle the NEO threat and an international forum for discussion and action on the issues. The Government, through the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), is also undertaking a study of the telescope requirements for finding, tracking and characterisation of NEOs, with a view to identifying the most cost effective way to increase our knowledge of the NEO threat. The British National Space Centre is to continue to take responsibility for NEO policy and coordination on the subject between Government Departments.

More information on the UK Government's response can be seen in our resources section.
