The SOHO spacecraft has imaged over 500 comets, but C/2002 V1 looks like becoming the most spectacular to date. This chance encounter with a coronal mass ejection (CME) could lead to new insights into the interactions between comets and the hot, charged particles produced by our nearest star. "Certainly such effects from a CME could give us new information about comets, their tails and how they interact with the solar wind," said Paal Brekke, SOHO deputy project scientist.
